Topic:  The Conjunction of New Media Art Practices, Research and Industry

The activity of both art and science has always been the interpretation and recreation of reality, an exercise of the human imagination creating concepts, forms and images that imbue our lives with meaning. Throughout history, art has continuously redefined itself in response to social and cultural transformations. Nowadays these transformations are closely linked to the pace of technological change, and therefore it is appropriate and necessary that art’s aesthetic and conceptual wherewithal addresses these changes at all levels.

Over the last 20 years, as director of the ZKM Institute for Visual Media Karlsruhe, the UNSW iCinema Research Centre Sydney, and of the CityU ALiVE laboratory, I have been deeply engaged in the articulation of this conjunction between art practice, academic research and industrial innovation.  In my BODW presentation I shall describe instances where the trans-disciplinary synergetic relationship between art, science and industry insists on, aligns and imbues technological achievement with cultural value, social benefit and individual meaning.
