Topic: Culture and Design Education

Denmark is considered to be among the best educated, most well-informed and richest countries in the world. And we are famous throughout the world for our design. But even Denmark faces challenging times becoming a post-industrial global player. Both ecological and economical changes challenge us and force us to renew and redesign the notion of Danish Design. In the 20th century, Western countries asked: “what’s profitable and what’s possible?” This led to over-consumption of natural resources and a looming overload of eco-systems.

Our Danish Design educational paradigm builds on craft traditions, inter-disciplinary teamwork, and especially democracy holds the potential to give Danish Design a revival. Designers can become tomorrow’s pioneers by introducing beautiful and aesthetic products and systems that are sustainable. But also by introducing clever, better and inexpensive welfare and beautiful and meaningful experiences and communication for people around the world. We do this by combining research, artistic development and practice; and very importantly – together with the corporate world and international partners.

In Kolding we teach our students to become T-shaped designers who ask critical questions like: what’s profitable, what’s possible and what’s meaningful?

We call it "Design a la Kolding".
