Ilpo Koskinen

Professor Ilpo Koskinen joined the ranks of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design in August 2014. He has been interested in industrial design and information technology, and lately service and community design, always from a research point of view.

His specialty is methodology; his most recent book was well-received "Design Research through Practice," published by Morgan Kaufmann. He has published well over 100 papers, conference papers and books.

Koskinen is an experienced teacher, project leader, and thesis supervisor especially at MA/MSc and doctoral levels. In his favourite class, his students hacked a car to build interactive prototypes. The car became a sensor and an instrument for games, social technologies, and safety devices. His former students work in several countries in Europe, North America and Asia.

Due to his background in the social sciences and design, Koskinen knows how to work with many kinds of partners. If curious about design, or interested in organizing design classes, doctoral studies, or professional level design research, you can contact him at the School of Design.
